Representing place

Project 1

This project require use to carry out with site visit at Petaling Street in order to produce a book as the final out come of this module. The assignment is continues and related briefly is a procedure of producing a book from an idea until a solid book outcome. In a group of 6 we are require to survey curtain part in Petaling Street and end up combining information with other groups to produce a book.

Reflection

Throughout this module i had much skills toward interviewing and some music band knowledge as well according to our tutor is an amazing influencer and sharing so much personal experience during the class in order to create better atmosphere during the class. Furthermore, i had learn about process of publishing a book and a procedure of producing a book thank you to this module and i had become more skilled toward this procedure.

Building Structure

Project 1

For this project, in a group of 5 members, we need to select the design of one of the members in studio 3. Working in a group, we are required to re-design the roof of that building by using truss designs. By using any material of our choice, we construct the model of our design. The size of the model must be appropriate to fit well on an A2 baord.

Project 2

This project, it is divided into two parts, first part should be done in a group while the second part is an individual work.

Part 1 – 15% (Group components)
Working in a group of 3 members, each group is to design a 2 storey bungalow which consist of the following components:
1. 1 master bedroom with attached bathroom
2. Minimum 3 bedrooms
3. 2 bathrooms
4. Kitchen
5. Living hall
6. Dining area
7. 1 store room.

Part 2 – 25% (Individual components)
Each student is required to:

1. To analysis minimum 6 beams (each beam must subject to different types of load, i.e. UDL from one or more than one slabs, beam with point load(s) or combination of UDL and PL)
2. To analysis minimum 3 columns (from roof to foundation level)

Building Services

Project 1

Aims to develop an understanding of building services through the demonstration of appropriate service system in the building design by ourselves in Semester 2 Design Studio. Related drawings, diagrams, appropriate symbols and ubbl are required to develop ability to resolve issues related to specific building services system. These systems include:
i) electrical supply system
ii) cold water and hot water supply system
iii) sewerage and sanitary system
iv) drainage system

Project 2

This project aim to introduce basic principles and integrate various building systems through real life project. It also helps to gain basic understanding on the drawing conventions as well as standards for various building system. In a group of 6, we are to select a multi storey building with the following service system:

i. Mechanical Ventilation
ii. Air-conditioning System
iii. Active and Passive Fire Protection System
iv. Mechanical Transportation System

A site visit to the selected building have given us an opportunity to have a hands on experience in exploring various building service in a building. We are required to carry out an analytical study and document all the findings, diagrams, literature reviews, as well as photos accordingly. UBBL are referred to justify if the selected building meets all the requirements stated.

Asian architecture

Project 1

We are required to choose a contextual architecture and conduct an in depth analytical case studies. The building that i have chosen is S11 house. According to the brief, it calls for a house for 2 generational family equipped with resort facilities and green features. Attached below is the presentation board showcasing the understanding.

Project 2

The second project is a collaborative effort between the six members of the group to produce a detailed written paper on a chosen topic proposed on our own regarding the building. We must then write a 2000 word case study paper to showcase our findings in relation to the topic chosen. Our topic is "Building Orientation of the S11 House as a Passive Design Consideration for Architecture in a Tropical Climate". Below is our report:

Project 1

Personal space

Elderly needs extra care due to physical deterioration. The furniture is required to be flexible, lightweight, and easy to be operated. A visit to the nursing homhas given us an opportunity to approach the aged group and understand their basic needs. Later, we are required to choose a client and design a furniture for him/her based on their daily as well as emotional needs.

Project 2A

Project 2B

Upon completing the site analysis, it helps us to gain a basic understanding on site and derived the concept as well as poetic quality in respond to the site context. One of the idea is to strengthen the bonding between aged group and youngster together by utilizing the existing space for related activities and make them interact together.  I have studied on a few nursing home from different countries and tried to applied the related concept into my building. The floor plans and the approaches are satisfying but i think there are so much room of improvements in term of building elevations and overall relationship with the site. The feedback on the judgement day are very helpful and have given me more idea to achieve my concept. Interesting landscapes and the public gathering space should be more well thought and designed in order to make the elderly home integrate more with the site. I understand that there are more space for improvement and will definitely work harder for the coming assignments.

Studio 3

Project 1

In this project, a group of 5 students were required to perform research and design a memorial base on two poems chosen in order to express poetics within our designs. The poem and song chosen was "A dog has died" and " I dreamed a drea" respectively.

Project 2

In the same group from Project 1, students have to conduct site analysis of the physical context within the identified MACRO & MICRO sites based on the Orientation (sun path), Climate (rainfall & temperature), Site contours, Adjacent street and vehicular traffic patterns, Pedestrian circulation, Neighbouring contexts, Vegetation, Views from the site, Views to and through the site, Noise, Human-Cultural and SWOT Analysis and compile them in 7-10 minutes video. Our site is the Bukit Cina located in Malacca City.

Final Project

In this project, students have to propose a design scheme which response to the site (site topography, history and socio-cultural events), functional program and users’ experiences for their VIC. They have to select  initial design ideas and develop it by producing a schematic plan and section, and a study model 1:250 respond to the physical site context and functional requirements. Besides, they are required to generate design through conscious consideration of human scale, natural light, materials/texture, the flow of experience such as flow of space, intermediate/transition spaces, the variation and hierarchy of spaces, inside/outside relationship, manipulation of light, texture & materiality and scale & proportion. Visitors should be inspired and informed in ways that somehow express the spirit of place.

Bus Shelter

Project 1 (Bus Shelter)

In this project, in a group of five to six people. students are required to construct a temporary bus shelter according to the following specifications: scale, construction, form joints, materials and other design considerations. Students have to build the bus shelter model in 1:20 and do the analysis, construction progress in the form of A3 bound report. Students are encouraged to use annotated sketches / diagrams to explain the construction, joints, forces, structural movement experienced during the testing of the shelter.

Final Assignment

We had chosen TENSILE as our building study object.

Chosen Building
MGM form Las Vegas

A significant tensile building, we had chosen this building as for our case study about grid shell construction.

In this project, in a group of 3, students are to propose a building (tensile/membrane construction or grid shell construction) and identify the structural systems used in the construction of the building and also describe each structural system identified in terms of Function, Material and Load Distribution. Students are required to produce one construction detail model with suitable scales and materials on an A3 size base and also one A2 size sheet utilizing both sides which consist of the analysis and drawings.

Building Science (Final)

For this project, in a group of 6, we were to choose a building that would showcase the basic building design for thermal comfort. Record and analyse the existing condition in terms of thermal comfort of the interior directly affected by the basic building design.

Research should contain the following:

a. Building Introduction (images, pictures, diagrams, drawings and description)
b. Site analysis; micro (wind, sun, topography, etc.)
c. Concept and analysis of buildings basic design strategies and proposed passive design strategy.
d. A proposal to achieve thermal comfort in the chosen space/building, elaborate design features with details, the effect on thermal comfort and importance of it.
e. Appropriate visuals and diagrams (tables, charts, etc.) with appropriate referencing and citation where applicable.

Reflection

Through this project, I have learnt how to properly analyze the thermal performance of a building through thermal calculation that we have learnt in class. With the calculation, we were able to determine which part of the house was problematic thus enabling us to focus and develop a solution. In addition, we also learnt the importance and the different types of passive design available that could be implemented to help the building achieve optimal thermal performance through natural ventilation. In conclusion, I had a great time learning and working with my fellow teammates.
