Studio 3

Project 1

In this project, a group of 5 students were required to perform research and design a memorial base on two poems chosen in order to express poetics within our designs. The poem and song chosen was "A dog has died" and " I dreamed a drea" respectively.

Project 2

In the same group from Project 1, students have to conduct site analysis of the physical context within the identified MACRO & MICRO sites based on the Orientation (sun path), Climate (rainfall & temperature), Site contours, Adjacent street and vehicular traffic patterns, Pedestrian circulation, Neighbouring contexts, Vegetation, Views from the site, Views to and through the site, Noise, Human-Cultural and SWOT Analysis and compile them in 7-10 minutes video. Our site is the Bukit Cina located in Malacca City.

Final Project

In this project, students have to propose a design scheme which response to the site (site topography, history and socio-cultural events), functional program and users’ experiences for their VIC. They have to select  initial design ideas and develop it by producing a schematic plan and section, and a study model 1:250 respond to the physical site context and functional requirements. Besides, they are required to generate design through conscious consideration of human scale, natural light, materials/texture, the flow of experience such as flow of space, intermediate/transition spaces, the variation and hierarchy of spaces, inside/outside relationship, manipulation of light, texture & materiality and scale & proportion. Visitors should be inspired and informed in ways that somehow express the spirit of place.

Bus Shelter

Project 1 (Bus Shelter)

In this project, in a group of five to six people. students are required to construct a temporary bus shelter according to the following specifications: scale, construction, form joints, materials and other design considerations. Students have to build the bus shelter model in 1:20 and do the analysis, construction progress in the form of A3 bound report. Students are encouraged to use annotated sketches / diagrams to explain the construction, joints, forces, structural movement experienced during the testing of the shelter.

Final Report

Final Assignment

We had chosen TENSILE as our building study object.

Chosen Building
MGM form Las Vegas

A significant tensile building, we had chosen this building as for our case study about grid shell construction.

In this project, in a group of 3, students are to propose a building (tensile/membrane construction or grid shell construction) and identify the structural systems used in the construction of the building and also describe each structural system identified in terms of Function, Material and Load Distribution. Students are required to produce one construction detail model with suitable scales and materials on an A3 size base and also one A2 size sheet utilizing both sides which consist of the analysis and drawings.

Building Science (Final)

For this project, in a group of 6, we were to choose a building that would showcase the basic building design for thermal comfort. Record and analyse the existing condition in terms of thermal comfort of the interior directly affected by the basic building design.

Research should contain the following:

a. Building Introduction (images, pictures, diagrams, drawings and description)
b. Site analysis; micro (wind, sun, topography, etc.)
c. Concept and analysis of buildings basic design strategies and proposed passive design strategy.
d. A proposal to achieve thermal comfort in the chosen space/building, elaborate design features with details, the effect on thermal comfort and importance of it.
e. Appropriate visuals and diagrams (tables, charts, etc.) with appropriate referencing and citation where applicable.

Reflection

Through this project, I have learnt how to properly analyze the thermal performance of a building through thermal calculation that we have learnt in class. With the calculation, we were able to determine which part of the house was problematic thus enabling us to focus and develop a solution. In addition, we also learnt the importance and the different types of passive design available that could be implemented to help the building achieve optimal thermal performance through natural ventilation. In conclusion, I had a great time learning and working with my fellow teammates.
